Atlas Engine Plates for Wideline?

Hi.

I need to buy a set of Engine Plates to fit an Atlas engine into a Wideline - Are the engine plates for all dominator/Atlas's the same and will the also be the some for fitting into a WIdeline?

And before someone says it - I dont want to make my own set. . . . . .

I think the engine plates are the same for all the featherbed twins. The only difference is in the front frame mounting points. Slimline has two sets & wideline one.

I'm not to fussed either way with Steel or Alloy, had thought Alloy was maybe more for racing applications, lightweight and generally on smoother circuits with lower total miles, steel possibly being more suitable for a road bike.

I use 5mm steel plates for my Commando motor in my Wideline I made a set of 6mm alloy plates later on but found they had more vibrations than the steel plates and really between the steel plates and alloy plates there is not that much difference in weight, yes the alloy ones are a bit lighter but down below don't make much difference, I made all my engine mounts, where I worked had a OXY profile cutter to cut them out but these days plasma cutters makes things a lot easier and 5mm plate is cheap to buy.

Cheers all, can anyone confirn Matchless's comment that the plates are the same for a wideline and slimline, but just using 1 front plate on the wideline

He didn‘t say ‘one front plate’ he said ‘one set of mounting points’ ie brackets welded to the frame that the plates bolt to.

If you want confirmation of fit, I’d suggest a quick email to RGM, they normally reply very promptly in my experience.

A note on alloy plates. Back in the sixties, alloy plates fitted straight away in a slimline. Then they were made from 1/4" plate. Plates I bought recently was 5/16" thick. Front ones don't fit in a slimline without machining. Also needed longer bolts.
It is quite possible that they could work on a wideline as the front lugs are different.

1/4 alloy are not as strong as steel, and may crack. Back in the 1960s 5/16 Dural was the way to go.
 
1/4 alloy plate is perfectly fine and will last virtually indefinitely provided they are made out of decent stuff and well designed.

Unity Equipe “Converta” plates were perhaps the most ubiquitous in the UK for years, and they were shit. Not enough depth of material around the gearbox mounting slots and / or rear most mounting points. Hence, that’s where they crack.

They also need to fit well, and not be under any stress. If they’re under stress, and vibration, they’ll crack. If stronger plates are used, your frame or crank cases will crack instead.
 
Hi Nigel, good to know .......as I will purchase some to build up a Cdo engine into a slimline , I am looking after TGA (same as Molnar ?) any thoughts ......and no I will not build them myself !
and to hijack a bit what are your thoughts , vertical or tilted ..........as I have a spare old Maney 2/1 exhaust , a tilted seems the way to go but ??
 
To say Converta plates are “shit” is too categorical. If you specifically mean Converta plates for an Atlas with an Atlas engine, I have no experience, but:

I can only estimate the road miles on my Converta Triton plates from Unity Equipe at something like 80,000 on a pretty vibratory Triton. The frame has cracked in two different places that time. Are Norton frames shit?
