The step will be at the top but hidden.

That way the liner cannot drop due to the step and the head stops it from rising.

If you remove one of the allen bolts then inside the hole you should be able to see the step.
 
As far as I'm aware both the Norvil and RGM big bore kits originally had Cosworth pistons requiring the small ends to be bored out to suit the larger Cosworth gudgeon pin size.

Yes my mistake top of the liner should be 85.7mm not 81mm :rolleyes:

I've machined many blocks and barrels over the years and the top diameter does not appear to have any step, diameter is approximately 86mm, it is possible but unlikely.
In the case we would install this type of plain sleeve we would machine and leave a step at the bottom of the barrel, below the area of ring travel and of course the cylinder head stops liner movement from the top.
I haven't removed an allen bolt yet to see any evidence.

Is this a measurement you've confirmed by measuring actual liner?

If it is then perhaps it does have a step.

My measurement is approximate of course as I'm unable to check actual diameter as sleeve is installed.
