Just chasing some info regarding some info regarding purchasing fuel tanks form India

Hi ,I looked up Greg Marshes useful info re frame numbers ,Seems like I have a 69 frame that was built in England as the tubing size is imperial .
Mine has the riveted plate with the number stamped on it on the left hand side .This plate was painted over ,upon removing the paint all the other info had been sanded off .
Why ,who knows
As the bike came from California ,I might contact the Norton Club over there and see if they have any ideas .

Hi Wheelie there is a mob in Adelaide called vintagebike_aus they are selling Indian tanks but are based here so may be better able to deal with problems you might have . I havent used them but might be worth a try.

Looking for info regarding a Commando rear swingarm dimensions.
I have what can be described as a parts bin special ,69 frame ,850 engine etc .
Am currently doing some work on it and removed the swingarm to check it for straightness as always had an issue trying to get the bike to track straight but simply rode around the problem .
The bike has the later version of swingarm with triangular bracing at the rear of the spindle tube and runs the later model cush drive hub.
I believe the 69 models came without any bracing in that area .
I read somewhere recently the motors are offset slightly to the left (i think ) in the engine cradle and the rear wheel spokes are slightly off center to bring the wheels back into line .

Can anyone tell me if the swingarms are symmetrical to the pivot spindle and not intentionally offset .

I cannot find any specs on this, only ones for checking frame dimensions .
A rough check today seems to indicate, the arms measured at the chain adjuster slots appear to be about 1/4 inch more to the right of centre of the swingarm pivot pin and one side is about 1/8 lower than the other which would account for a wheel leaning over slightly ..
Indications that this bike has been in an accident in its past life but everything else frame wise appears straight
Thanks
Dave

Hi ,thanks for that .
A friend of mine who buys a lot of bike parts online suggested if they don,t have a website or a listed phone number to be vary wary .
I could find neither .
I had a recent experience with a company that had an Aussie name etc . turns out it was based in Hong Kong .
What i ordered arrived eventually ,but had no confirmation order had been received or processed and thought I had done my money for a while .
Thanks anyway

Theoretically not or the shocks would lean over.
Thought so but with some modern bikes and the tyre widths, drive assemblies sometimes they do .
Didnt think in 69 they would though but thought I would just ask.
I am guessing with the later swingarm goes the later cush drive hub .
Thanks

That may be true of many online selling sites, but if you require the seller to have a website and phone number on eBay you'll never be buying anything there!

I've bought hundreds of things on eBay, including a lot of motorcycles and most sellers have nothing outside eBay and it's against the eBay agreement to post direct contact info. So, I always check the feedback and never buy from anyone without a 99% or higher positive and won't buy anything expensive from someone without at least 100 feedbacks. I also don't buy from companies listed as India, China, or several others.

Hi .I own a 69 Commando that was imported into Australia from California about 15 years ago . Its a bit of a parts bin special with what i believe to be a Roadster chassis (central mounted oil tank ),a mk 2 850 engine with Fastback tank ,seat and ducktail.
The bike had been repainted and looked immaculate but a fault with the fibreglass tank soon became apparent .
About 12 years ago i bought a new ADR Mouldings fibreglass tank from UK and sealed it inside with a special tank sealer just to be sure our fuel didn,t damage the glass even thought the resin used in the manufacture of the tank was supposed to be compatible with modern fuels .
This tank has recently started to leak fuel along the bottom edge when the top 1/2 of the base are glued together of the tank on both sides .
I used an endoscope to look inside the tank and found the tank sealer to be cracked in places and the what ever glue was used to both halves together has failed as well hold .
I am currently splitting the tank apart along the seams just to have a good look .
Am looking at getting an alloy or steel tank out of India hopefully without getting scammed or a poor quality product and have been reading some of the comments on other peoples experiences .
Any recommendations would be appreciated ie Royal Choppers ,Vintage 24x7,Khanmousin ,Enfieldcounty spares etc
I bought an indian gas tank , roadster style commando. It looks correct but mountings are wrong fuel tap thread size different. It was some tine ago, i just set it on the shelf. It was relatively inexpensive so not worth trying to return or modify. I would need to look it over again to see just what was wrong, ut came with sude civers too also wrong.

I bought a steel PR tank from vintage_classic_parts44. Came painted with a cap, delivered quite quickly, well wrapped and without any import fees here in Denmark (which I don't really understand but did not complain about  ).
The shape was ok, though it doesn't quite sit correctly, in that it needs a lot of packing up on the front mounts to get the correct horizontal bottom edge.
The mounting studs are M8 rather than 5/16 UNF.
The paint is well finished, good gloss but a touch thin.
The cap didn't seal very well, but I replaced it with an original cap which does now seal.
The price was £220 delivered, which is less than a good paint job.
All in all, I'm pleased with it, but note that the PR shape is much less complex than the Roadster. YMMV.

If you want a good looking Roadster Tank then the Emgo one from Taiwan is the way to go, not India as the shape is all wrong plus the normal shortcuts such as metric threads, funny tap threads etc.

I have some. 06-2701 Shipping to me made them pretty expensive and today tariffs would make them ridiculous. Wassell has plenty in stock, so if you know a Wassell Dealer and are in the UK they are probably not bad. Based on the picture, I think AN is getting them from Wassell. I used to get them from JRC, but the last batch actually cost me less delivered from Wassell!
