Lucas K1F magneto cut out

Hi folks, I'm looking to rig a a security device on my Velo Venom. It has a Lucas K1F magneto and I want to fit a cut out to the end cap. I believe it just needs a contact touching the centre nut which when earthed will kill the sparks. Is this correct?

would anyone know if the end cap is the same as the K2F magneto, as I have found this on Ebay, but not sure if it will fit..

As originally manufactured, these magnetos do not have a facility for an ignition cut out. That has now changed! Following numerous enquiries from our customers over the years we have now developed a neat, reliable modification to enable a cut out to be fitted to your machine.

Sorry , I know the guy (Bill Brown if my memory still good) is operating now from France and at least do not answer to my phone call last week (though he had worked for us last year ) , but his son is working in UK under King Pin components and is alsovery nice guy ............

Doug rebuilds Lucas magnetos exclusively.

Doug can provide you with the K2F cut out brush holder, and brush. It is a simple job to drill out the center of your end cap, and install the K2F brush holder. Tell him what you are trying to accomplish, he will know what parts to supply. According to my parts diagram, you need Lucas part no. 459288 which is called Terminal Assembly. You may also need the brush and spring part no. 455190, but this may be included in the Terminal Assembly.

I think you would be wasting your money on the end cap you show in your link.

Hi Slick, the problem is that I have the clip on type cap so can't drill the centre and fit the brush holder. Plus I really wanted to keep it looking original if possible.

Any possibility of modifying the clip, to make 2 half clips?

I have a cunning plan...


I bent a brass strip and temporarily fixed it with tack stuff to the inside of the cap. I rotated the cap and it didn't hit anything. Then I marked the brass with a sharpie so I could see the contact point and adjust where necessary. So my plan is to drill a small hole in the side and fix a stud to the strip, then I can attach a wire to it on the outside. I think that should work, do you?

I would think that would work until the brass wore out from contact with the center fixing bolt.

If you can get the brass strip to ever so lightly contact the center bolt, it may last a long time.

It is worth a try.

I think it will work just fine. It would take the screw head a long time to make a hole through the brass and even then it’s not a breakdown.

You could make a carbon brush to sit in a hole in the brass, by filing down a brush, or making one out of a carbon rod from out of a torch battery.

It's got about 2mm of preload, so I think it should be a pretty light pressure. The centre bolt is domed as well, so it won't gouge it.

Actually I was wondering how I could attach a carbon button to the end. Any idea?
 
A brush with stepped diameter, the smaller diameter stuck through a hole in the brass arm, the larger diameter end contacting the points centre screw.

Sorry, what I should have said is how can I fix it, but I guess a blob of JB Weld or similar on the back would do it. (where it goes through the brass)

The stock K2F brush is a stepped unit, having a reduced diameter for the spring. It would have to be cut down lengthwise to fit.
