Normal response will be that yours is a unique Commando made wrong at the factory and that kit is made for the correctly made ones. LOL

Indeed. I have a seat that is correct ? Answer was I had a rogue Italian frame ! The belt drive problems. Answer. All mark3 bikes were different, with kits having to be tailer made ? They never managed that ! 3 belts and several pulleys later. Between the frame and primary sizes I feel honoured to have such a unique machine. Is it worth more ?? Roy.

In my book, the "tipping point" was $2,500.

Indeed. Especially on nortons. I have a step through c70 that starts with a little tap on the kickstart and is still fun in its own way. I got used to children pointing and laughing at old man on a step through. In fact I feel sorry for them and their electric scoots. Can't fit a straight thru megaphone on them. Or get home after a roadside repair with a screwdriver a hammer ! Merry Xmas to all. Unless you've got tassles hanging out of you handlebars !!!

I feel that Norvil may have moved the top gearbox bolt hole slightly forward to help fit/clear the starter motor around the rear iso mount. Maybe? As the one supplied in the kit is a copy of the MK3 cradle I wouldn't know for sure. The starter is tight for clearance back against the iso. This would explain the loose belt. I used a 32T front pulley belt system on this matching# bike for 20 years with great reliability, the Norvil kit supplied a 33tooth pulley and I eventually made up a 34tooth pully to achieve correct belt tension.
The Nevawoz ES I ride has almost 11,000 miles on it in 4 yrs and is made from bits. I have an early cradle, s/arm and drum wheel. I locked the box in place and fitted a bearing in the ES primary over the high gear nose for support. Early right side gearbox. No parts of this bike came from the factory on the same day or even same year except the Mk3 bottom end, I even have a drum leg with a made up disc carrier and Honda caliper. I used this bike on a 2500 trip recently and the only problem was aftermarket muffler mounts and the Pazon which left me stuck in heavy traffic in heavy rain. Being an old fart and somewhat suspicious of modern electronics I had a Boyer and a points setup in the bags. Old bikes with buttons for old farts with bad knees. mind you it took giving up drinking, drugs, gambling and titty bars to afford them.

I point blank refuse to give up drinking. Pssttt goes the 4th tin !

The write up in November 2023 NOC Roadholder magazine (p 16 & 17) states that with the fixed gearbox position and supplied sprockets & belt there is "no risk of getting this wrong now", referring to belt tension.
I wonder why that was not what you experienced.

Why is it then that for a mk3 gearbox, crankcase and cradle they hadn't a clue how to get it right ?? Don't tell me, mk3 frames were all different and mk2 ones were exactly identical. Stupid (£600.00 wasted )me ! Twats!!! Roy.
