Recommendations for a small bag?

I am looking for a small soft bag to carry a jacket and a few tools on the 74 Commando. My wife does not ride, so something that attaches to the stock seat will be fine. Does anyone have a recommendation?

bought this for my 74 - got it off amazon - from what i remember, paid somewhere around $45, however, looks like the price has gone crazy. carries quite a bit of stuff . nice bag, well made --

i run an Iron & Resin roll top soft bag on on Triumph bonneville and really like it for the looks and versatile storage ability. Had it on bike for five years now. Can fit most frames via nylon web straps with quick release D-rings. Poly-U coated lining, canvas and leather trim exterior. Black or tan versions. Have not yet tried fitting to Commando but should be fine.

My roll bag - tool roll is similar but made of some kind of synthetic black pseudo leather , made in China. Just got it in from Amazon. Have yet to fit it up front under the headlight would be my choice but if it doesn't fit there I will move it to the rear. I don't like weight on the rear , the front is my preference to avoid rear loop droop. It weighs about 2 ounces or a bit. I know it will not last too long. The metal rivet studs all over it are the weight. I run a new luggage rack rearwards from England. So I keep that action for light things , like sleeping bags and a light tent. My throw-over bags take the real weights ( fishing gear , food , vino , water, medicines , extra clothes. ) . Next time I visit Mexico or Guatemala I will bring back a real leather one. I travel a lot unless It's Covid times. Africa this winter .

I've had this Wolfman bag on mine for years and keep it stuffed with everything from a fire extinguisher to any tool I might need plus gloves and baling wire.

I use a backpack, but I don't carry a lot of weight unless I'm close to where I want the cargo to be. If I need to get further down the road I'll relax the straps so that the bulk of the weight rests on the seat.

A luggage rack can carry more weight without burdening the rider, but invites curious eyes. I don't see a Commando as a mule and riders who strap weight on invariaby scratch and mar finish and tear seat covering. I would rethink this if I was 50 years younger...

Russ, I have Kriega bags which should be available somewhere (I used the RevZilla link as it was the first one to come up in a search)
The 5 is quite small so seeing the range in person is a good idea (if possible)
They are USA made as far as I know and the quality/price reflects that.

Do those leather tool pouches come with a stick on beard.

for 1 or 2 items a backpak would seem the right choice, but i like to put my helmet under cover, and haul milk and other grocery items, so i went to a givi v46 top box, and swap it between bikes.

Mine is by Joe Rocket. I've had it for 10 years or so, don't think this model is current. Big enough for a sweatshirt, gloves, some tools, maps, and a few spare parts. Wouldn't fit behind the seat without a luggage rack.

Laptop PC, extra clothing, phone holster, perf gloves, sunglasses case, etc.
Fits the styro box take-out food sitting flat as well.

I have a few bags that fit on a luggage system that Matt used to offer. I don’t know if they’re still available,so I have a nelson Riggs cylindrical bag that attaches to the small rack...not that it matters but this system also has side painniers that’ll hold a couple days worth of clean clothes or light camping gear,I think if someone could find a kit they’d be happy with it.these bags follow the lines of the rear frame and shocks and are really well made
I also run a magnetic tank bag

For a tool roll, overtrousers and a few spare plugs and cables I've got this Autokicker bag strapped to the seat, the straps wrap under ok and there's a velcro strap for the grab rail but it's firm enough without it.
Edit: My seat isn't standard, it's one of Burton Bike Bit's offerings: Cafe racer small hump so please bear in mind the strap length could be too short.

I went with the Kriega US20, and it was in stock at the local Cycle Gear store. A bit larger than I was looking for, but plenty or space for tools, gloves and my old Belstaff jacket. It comes with various straps that facilitate installation on different bikes--a major plus!

I am riding tomorrow (Sunday) with a small group; the Norton tank and side covers are still at the paint shop, so the bag is strapped on to the Vincent seat. The bag should easily tie to the Norton frame using the provided straps.

I'm a bit surprised as that bag doesn't fit my concept of "small" but appears to be well thought out.
