Repaired cases for sale on FleaBay

Would anyone consider using these repaired i.e. welded cases?

I've bought Norton things from him before. He's very knowledgeable about the brand, and does consort with people who are known experts.
However, this is a repair of an extreme event, so I'd contact the welder to see what their guarantee is. Interesting that it's on a UK ebay auction and not in NA and no picture of the area of repair.

Surely there are cases around that haven't been holed/welded. In theory, a good weld should be as strong as the original casting. But I've seen plenty of times where this was NOT the case (NPI). Welds can look good and be faulty and look bad and be totally sound. I'd personally look elsewhere for undamaged cases but, as noted, if you are confident in the abilities of a particular welder based on his track record and warranty, that might make it worthwhile.

When I pull up the listing there are 23 pictures which include pics taken from every angle of both case halves. It seems to me there is no way that the repair is NOT pictured. So I'd say the repair looks so good it is not noticeable. That's a good thing...but whether it is structurally "as good as new," well...who knows?

the welding can't be that good. I've searched these pictures and can't find a thing. Are these the cases for sale? If a rod went through the case it would be a big hole. Email him and ask where the weld is.
I have a set of 750 cases I would be willing to trade...same year. Ken Armann had them welded years ago and I never used them. He spotted a crack left side rear where it is not unusual. I didn't even spot it. I can send you a picture if you want.

That’s exactly my view.

Building an engine is an expensive and time consuming business. Starting out with cases of unknown history having an unknown repair quality after and unknown disaster is just stacking unnecessary odds against you.

For the few £ saved, it just ain’t worth it IMHO.

I have bought off that seller who is good but unless they were your long lost cases and you still had the matching frame and gearbox it is a gamble even if free (Are the main bearing bores still round ?)

I payed $34 more for these cases, just need a new idler pinion installed due to rust otherwise nearly enough parts to build another 750 engine.
They were so cheap ($129) that AU customs stopped them until I linked them to the still view-able eBay auction that showed the sale price and engine number.

In the auction pictures (worldwide listing because that seller knows the world is not flat) of the OP cases you can see the weld repair on the inner side.

The problem with those repaired cases may not be so much the welding itself, but the distortion of the whole set up afterwords.
It is a lot of work to get that sorted with a lot of fixtures, aligning- work etc. I have a Mk III case on my shelf which I used for sometime before I found a decent second one.
The owner of the second cases didn't tell me prior sale (EBAY as well). Again after a second welding job and some work on a milling machine i got that straightened and it's now working fine for the last 6500 miles. But as I said distortion is the problem, not the welding itself.

I guess the welding is shown in the middle pic of row six in the description.

Welding is in the part below the drive side camshaft bearing .

Thanks for the feedback. That old rule "you get what you pay for" seems to apply here as well. I'll look for some cases that haven't been welded.
