One of those 4-6" cable drive extensions with an allen head tip installed is the absolute trick to the 4 carb manifold screws.

I don't but it seems logical (to me) that the recess in the rubber is made to fit over the flange.

The airbox is fitted to the frame, the carbs to the engine. The isolastics allow the two to move, if not quite independently, they are not fixed. So I would think there's a decent chance of leaks if just pushing against each other, more so than for non-isolastic bikes. Whether that affects anything, I don't know. I have other bikes where even the rumour of an airbox leak causes mayhem!

I agree that it's logical, but IMHO, an unneeded PITA. That said, when I use the narrow HamCan filters, I screw the adapter on backwards and put the flange in the boot. This is because the narrow filters available today are a little too narrow and the boots won't stay on. They won't reach with the adapter on normally.

Check out RGM's cut down hamcan filter and grille. Gives a cleaner look and easier R&R. My only issue is you must then use their cut down filter, whih is a disposable type. A uear or two ago we had a thread discussing cutting back the stock grille DIY and finding a reusable filter element. There was some contact with K&N about getting one made or using a foam kit you cut to suit.

The RGM filter barely works - it's 1.9" which is a little too narrow but will work with the carb adapters on backwards. Notice how stretched the boots are.
K&N had a filter not meant for Norton that was slightly smaller circumference but still worked perfectly as it was 2.1" but they no longer produce it. I tried to get them to quote me on a perfect filter and they twice promised and twice crickets.
