Triumph Thruxton Fairing fitted to Norton 961 - I want one (a lot)!

Waiting for the 'You need to buy another 961 so you can have one with and one without'.

I have a red Ducati Supersport S for when I just love riding a fast modern sports bike with a big shiny fairing and my 961 for when I just love chugging around on an old traditional bike..... Am I indecisive???????

Pending ‘upgrade(??)’ to the 961CR - fitting the Triumph Thruxton race fairing. I’ve had it sat somewhere to the rear of the back burner for quite some time.

Looking at it again. Have the fairing and mounting, bike customisation/paint businesses identified. Gonna decide on this decidedly undecided endeavour:rolleyes:!

Below representative images may be of use to anyone else contemplating this mod. Scale and aspect of the race fairing are not exact, but are a pretty close representation.

Looking good! I know it’s probably too early to tell, but will the clocks clear the fairing on full lock?
 
Clearance will be fine I believe Cliff, the fairing will be mounted to the original Thruxton fairing frame. The rear projections are too narrow for that fat ol’ Norton tank, so will need modification.

If anything, bar clearance may be key. Plenty of room for those ABM bars though BT, which is obviously a deciding factor.

Interesting that with the 961 ovelayed to the Thruxton, it shows that they have quite similar overall ergos. Clocks look to be at almost identical height. Bars are very different as you’d expect - the Thruxton must be like riding an armchair in comparison!

For anyone else looking to ease the pain of their ‘instrument of torture’ and fit ABM or Probrake Revo (etc) adjustable clip-ons there may be unforeseen (by me anyway) problems! :rolleyes:

Finally, just about to order the Revo bars, I decided to have one last look’n’measure. Although advertised as fitting all 961 models including my Cafe Racer, the clamp height (for all models) is stated as 44mm, as far as I can see - used as a selling point for safety.

Problem is, if I’m seeing this correctly, the CR bar clamp height is 32 mm. This is by spec obviously, with bar clamps being sandwiched between upper and lower triple trees, along with the headlight brackets - that overall dimension being dictated by the headstock (non-adjustable). So, unless I lose 8mm from somewhere (top’n’bottom of the headlamp bracket?) or remove same from Revo’s clamps they ain’t gonna fit and Probrake may be ‘selling a pup’. I’ll check with them.

ABM do multiple clamp heights including a ‘slim’ option at 28mm. Easy enough to have a spacer(s) made up to replicate the OEM clamp dimensions. ABM strangely don’t state bar length though - go figure!

Anyone see this situation any differently?

More procrastination required - looks like the rest will have to be removed to the back burner, again! By time it’s finally fully fettled I’ll be too old to ride ‘er! Good job fettlin’s half the fun……………… pass me another coldie!

Yes, you're correct about the ABM clip-ons slim (29mm) clamps. You'll need to have spacers make up for the difference. There are already 3mm or 4mm rubber spacers above and below the headlight clamp to keep tension on the clamp. So you'll need an additional 3mm spacer on each side to take up the slack of the shorter ABM slim clip-on clamp. Or, if you go with the thicker 39mm standard ABM clip-on, you just have to shave off 7mm from the headlight bracket mount. I like to the idea of a thicker clip-on clamp for safety, but the ABM slim is an easier way to go.
I don't know if your control wiring will extend to fit the higher controls, mine would not, so you may have to get new ones, or lengthen your existing control wires to fit. Also, measure your hydraulic lines, you will probably need longer ones as well. These issues caused me to procrastinate also.
I decided not to do the changes, now being both retired and lazy.:D

Agreed BT, my thoughts now also - I’m gonna opt for the ABM bars (slim clamp) as the easier option. I only selected the Revo option because they look eaqually well made but list the 961 directly. I’ll contact them though and see what they have to say about the clamp height disparity.

I’ve looked quite closely at cable/hose length and any significant bar adjustment will require them to be changed/elongated of course. I used ChatGTP to ask a series of questions, just to see how it would perform. It was surprisingly thorough in its response.

Minor changes in bar position that may be sufficient for a little more comfort I may get away with. Not really gonna know until the bars are mounted and positioned roughly where I want them. If I need to change/extend that’s the time to carry it out. It’ll take a little more time but it’s worth getting them spot on - I have service providers for cables and braided hoses locally so shouldn’t be an issue.

I’ll update the thread as I go, if, as a lazy retiree, I can spare the energy!
