I’m right on the border with North Wales and am familiar with the routes you mentioned. I had a slight change of plan and went down to Crossgates via Market Drayton, Shrewsbury, Bishops Castle and Clun and came back vid the A483, Newtown, Welshpool, Oswestry, Ellesmere, Whitchurch. I was out at 6:45 this morning and now home after about 180 very enjoyable miles.I can recommend the Devils Staircase and the Abergwesyn common road from Tregaron to Beulah. And the road from the top of the Devils Staircase past Llyne Brianne to Llandovery (the Owls Nest cafe is meant to be good)
p.s. if youre thinking of going to Dom's at Leominster - dont, it hasnt re-opened yet.
