That looks interesting. Also do I see you’ve an extra long idle adjuster routed for LH use? There’s one in the box of parts I have it might help as it’s a pain with the RH. Only needed use since the temperature has dropped and basically crave a set of red lights😂

What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?
 
Yesterday I finished my carburetor project. I threaded the bottom half of the stock jet holder and made a brass tube to thread on to it to hold the float bowl to the underside of the carb 100 times more securely than 2 screws on the side of the carb ever did. It was a design that Owen Greenfield from Australia presented at the 2018 norton gathering in washington state. I liked the design back then but didn't buy it. This year I attempted my own copy of his brilliant idea. Here's that result...

Then Today, I changed fork oil, engine oil, and spark plugs. I filled her up with 92 no-ethanol and finally got around to safety wiring those noisy exhaust nut retaining rings so they would stop rattling away. A few times I thought the noises I heard was a cam lobe that had finally bit the dust. It was those damn exhaust nut rings rattling away. I celebrated my maintenance day by leaving 2 harleys in the dust on the on-ramp to the highway after fueling up. I ran up the hill on the highway towards my house at 100mph and they disappeared in my mirrors. Gotta break in that fresh royal purple oil! 🤣

I also had this strange buzz inside one of my dunstall mufflers which was annoying, so I pulled it off to see if I could make it go away. I pounded a dowel into the rear gattling gun holes and knocked the front grill forward and wedged it solidly into it's proper place. No more buzzing !!

As usual, I have questions...

The only new plugs I had were BPR7es and the ones I took out were (BP7es) not resistor plugs. I can't remember if my wires are resistor caps either, but the plugs seemed to work well. Started on the first kick. Anyone know what the difference is expected to be if both plugs and wires are resistor components being used together?? It seems to work. Is there are visible way to tell if the wires are resistor wires ?? or maybe an electrical test?
 
I changed the oil on one of my modern Triumphs and went for a ride on Norton. Nothing went wrong. I am getting nervous, waiting for the other shoe to drop...

Personally, given the fact that your crank will no doubt have been balanced, and your carbs are rubber mounted, I would doubt that your iso adjustments have made any difference.

It could just be that it needed using, clear the carbs a bit, etc.

There’s nothing in the manual/specs provided with the build about the crank being balanced but piston and rods are the same weights each side. The specs are quite comprehensive too.

One spec I’ve just notice is that the clips on the needles at shipping were 2nd from bottom but it appears Bill lowered them to bottom; he’s at sea level, I’m only 56m so likely running a tad rich, would explain issue perhaps? Next dry day is needle swap day:)

The wear you have is greater than 1 or 2 clip positions IMHO.

So I’d try good needles in the same clip positions first. Then see what’s what.
 
Good Norton day! I took out my MKIIA that I just got together for a run. All went well, she's running really well so far. This one has a Comstock big valve head, Pauter rods, forged pistons and a warmer cam. Then I took out my Combat that was recently finished. Really like that bike, but I want to change it from an Interstate to a roadster. Easy parts swap. Lastly, cleaned up the MKIII, installed the luggage racks. Last out was the old GS, got it up to operating temp so I could balance the carbs. Taking the MKIII out today for a run to get the oil hot, then do a change. I need to get the 650 out now, so that it doesn't feel slighted.
 
MK 111 down for new steering bearings work . Any tips ? Off the road for a week to do this . New bearings arrived today from Walridge Motors .

Stripped front end and knocked out a very rusty lower steering bearing before darkness set in . Tomorrow the top one goes out . To be replaced by 620SRS bearings . Had to abandon my work mid day because a Russian neighbour in this complex decided to drink on the street , yell about in Russian , then become a pain with the neighbours to the point where 2 took him down on the sidewalk . Right in front of my bike-work . I called up 211 and then 911 after the take-down . Cops and medics took him away , yelling in Russian . Back to steering head bearings tomorrow , I hope .

GTA man! Yikes! I guess that's what you get for living in an Arts district in downtown TO. I'll be heading that way to visit family in Waterloo for Thanksgiving this weekend. It would be nice to swing on over to your neck of the wood, but with the short time up there I rarely get past Waterloo.

I'm wondering about what made you decide to replace the bearings. I'm going to be redoing my front forks on my Combat this winter and was thinking about replacing the bearings as well. No wiggle in the steering head that I can notice, but no idea what condition the bearings are and figured "while I'm in there"...
Any suggestions on replacement kits for the front tubes and innards of the forks would be welcome.

Squirrels shaking down the conkers is my hazard. Need a freakin’ hard hat to access the shed sometimes. They come keen on a bald head !!

Bit of a shimmy / light wobble at medium speeds . Suspect because Acadian and myself rebuilt both fork tubes with all new components earlier this summer . Light wobble remained , so put on a new tire , no difference . Wheel bearings good , so packed / greased them with fresh grease . Nothing left to question/ replace except the main steering bearings . Banged them out with a long drift to find the lower bearing full of rust and dried grease . The top one was fine . Both are sealed type bearings . Used my big 1 1/2 " socket to tap in the 2 new bearings today . The perfect tool for the job . Darkness sets in and cold . Tomorrow is another day .
