What gives me pause is not having ready access to replacment fitlers for the RGM setup. If they were to offer a reuseable/cleanable filter with it, now we're talking....

The RGM one does work, but just. It's 1.9" which makes the boots have to stretch a little too far. The K&N E-3410 works well as they are 2-1/16", but they are discontinued and the last two bought were 1-3/4" which does not work (right part number, wrong filter in the box).

I tried before to get K&N to make me custom filters, but they never sent the quote. The guy I talked to the other day is supposedly the custom "guy". We'll see if he provides a quote as promised. A 2-1/8 washable filter would provide 3/4" more clearance for installing and would look normal to most.

Y'know I actually thought the RGM kit came with slightly longer boots to bridge the wider gap, but I can see they're the part Nos as the standards.

Ya, I thought the same and bought them - not longer. Since I had to use it, I used a 3/16" spacer (06.2170) behind each of the bottom rear air filter mounting bolts, and two instead of one for the top bracket. That made the carb side of the air cleaner as far away from the carbs as a 2-1/6" filter would make it. The boots work fine then. The carb-end of the boots has a slot just inside. You screw the carb adapter sleeves (03.3027) on "backwards" and their flange goes in the slot - the boots are very stable.

Nice tip on the adapter sleeve.

I'd be tempted to keep the standard parts and substitute the RGM narrow filter gauze/bolts

You did a beautiful job on that. I am also running a CNW Estart with their smaller filter but really like the way you put the screen on.After you cut and shaped the screen,how did you attach the cut ends?
