We have so many "experts" here that I got to wondering (always a bad idea). Who is actually an expert in what they are talking about.

If you go by schooling, I started my adult life as an expert in Electronics and Electromechanical Repair. That was long ago - not an expert in Electronics now for sure and probably still am in Electromechanical Repair. Later I became an expert in Mainframe Computer Repair by doing. That morphed into Mainframe Computer/Military Communicaitons and System Software - was even the world's authority on some things - no schooling. Today I'm an expert in IT and Programming - have a Master of Science in Computer Science but learned nothing getting it.

All that said, by schooling I know nothing about motorcycles - does 55 years' experience make me an expert on motorcycles? On some facets 60s and 70s British bikes, yes but certainly not all. Other than British, no.

There is a discussion on the clutch nut going on now - if you listen and treat all (including me) who seem like they know what they are talking about as experts, you'll never keep the clutch on your bike or you'll be afraid to try!

An example is a Belleville washer. A Mechanical Engineer probably could point to a web site or document that completely clarified their purpose and specifications. I looked at several sites and IMHO our experts, at best, know part of the truth and they certainly disagree with each other.

Maybe our signature should be required to list our expertise? (I know, silly thought).

I've replaced THOUSANDS of failed bellevelle washers, where we use 70 stacked opposing as the drawbar tension spring on CNC milling machines.

When they do that the incur a debt. However our genius professors have now discovered that a degree with no work experience is worthless. Our graduates cannot get jobs. Australia is about to go nuclear. How much do academics really know about radiartion safety ? All engineering is based upon science. In Australian industry engineers ore the lead profession - the managers. There was a lady engineer on talkback radio . She was talking about all the discoveries engineers have made. I sent them a text message saying 'if engineers are making all these innovations, what do scientists do ?'. They then started discussing the science behind the inventions.
My diploma is the Diploma of Applied Chemistry. That course no longer exists in Australia. Governments are really clever ? I do not think university professors really know much. And the economists are appalling. They must be the biggest bullshit artists ever.
I have suggested that in Australia, we have a problem measuring productivity. And that the meassurement should be based upon organisational eatio of profit to wages bill, and the tax regime should be adjusted on that basis. All wage increases are only justified by increases in productivity and we have had wage stagnation since the mid 1980s.
Our middle class has become absolutely screwed.
My outlook on road racing motorcycles is different because I am a scientst. When data is mulktivariate, cause and effect need to be assessed on the basis of pattern recognition. - Same with economics.
In Australia we play with interest rates - it is only onr factor in the economy. But the academic geniuses know everything. - EXPERTS in bullshit ?

Sounds like Australia follows the US to closely. Today, most US university degrees, at best, have taught you theories and you won't use them. My original Applied Electronics degree taught the theory need to "do" electronics, we had labs where we designed and built electronics using those theories and practical knowledge, and when graduated you had an in-demand skill, not just knowledge. I assume that Applied Chemistry was the same. My degree no longer exists either.

The saying "Those that can't do, teach" is more true today than ever. Also, in the US when you become a tenured professor, you can develop courses on just about anything and "teach" your students your convoluted thinking. And with more seniority you can force your crap courses into required course in degree programs that have nothing to do with the degree.

I dug a little deeper as you suggest H3 and watched your ‘ever so believable’ mock-up video. And found out, wait for it………. that b@#$d Gates has microchipped my dog Walter! Walter was helping me dig (he’s very good at that) for the truth and we found it, in his kneck - the chip that is, not the truth! Gates is routinely monitoring my families every movement through our pet dog!! As luck would have it, I’ve literally grown a third eye on the back of my neck since my vaxes - should help me keep a sharp eye out for the megalomaniac!!

I'm no fan of Bill Gates. I doubt I'll live long enough for his full story to come out but he is no nice guy. But the good retirement that I enjoy is because of him. Without his awful OS I would never have had a job that provides the pension. Lots of average type
people like myself were needed to clean up after him. To steal Jimmy Doolittle's line "I could never be so lucky again".
As for bikes and bike repair, I have a lot of experience because I have to do most jobs several times to get it even close to right.

Yep I've made one maybe two mistakes over the years

Yesterday we rented ATV's on a guided tour in Cozumel. HIGH MILEAGE/HRS. not very old fleet of Honda's.

Stopped for a break, and the bike in front of me wouldn't restart.

One guide/mechanic came over, began furiously pulling the pull start rope repeatedly.
I walked over, casually mentioned a green light on the dash would help us get going.
"I AM AN ENGINEER!" he informed me.
A wiggle on the gear change lever got us a green light, and the electric start lit it right up.

I learned to road race by crashing. These days I know there is no circumstance that can crash me. There is answer for every situation, and I have learned them all the wrong way. My wife has put the kybosh on my racing. The last time I raced she was beside my mate watching me. He got a bit excited when I rode under and past the three leaders, so she got anxiety. I should have told her that these says, there is no way that I am ever going to crash. I am not joking and I am certainly not bragging. It is nothing to brag about. I cannot believe I was so stupid that I would ever have gone racing and did what I have done.
If you are smart you learn to ride motocross, then get your daddy to buy you the modern equivalent of a Mondial 250. Then you will be Mike Hailwood.
The only good thing about what I did, was I learned a lot of useless shit about old motorcycles.

IMHO, you're a perfect example of something that once was crystal clear but has been largely lost during my lifetime. Bachelor degrees meant that you had knowledge of a lot of things related to a subject. When you got a Masters degree you were a master of a narrower subject - not a world's authority but definitely an authority. A PhD was THE authority on a narrow subject. To get there, years of research ended in a dissertation that was presented to others related to the subject and approved as to adding something new, at least a theory, to the world's body of knowledge.

Your subject is so narrow and specific that I'm sure, at least when written, you were the world's expert. Those with enough knowledge in the area to understand and pass judgment on what you wrote certainly increased their knowledge and since it was accepted, the rest of the world could have the knowledge too. After being awarded, I bet your study continued. Over time, you probably were slowly reduced from world's expert to expert on the subject as others used your work in theirs to enhance the knowledge of the subject further. Eventually your theory made be fully proven, further developed, remain the standard thinking, or disproven but all those are good things for knowledge.

Contrast that with the very full of himself USAF General with a PhD in Electrical Engineering I once worked with. His dissertation was "The State of Electrical Engineering Today". It was a boring regurgitation of information on Electrical Engineering from (text)books. It added nothing other than opinions to with world's body of knowledge but it sure enhanced his career. Today, you will see PhDs with dissertations that would barely qualify for a Masters and most masters today do not require a dissertation.

When Bill Gates was starting out, I habd one of only two minicomputers in Victoria. I was reading a book about Bill Gates and Steve jobs. They developed a space game which as similar to the one I crated. I taught myself to programme, and became pretty good at it. I think that the fact that I learned to play the banjo mandolin when I was a kid, and I loved Latin at school, helped me a lot. I think you use the same part of your brain. Most computer languages do similar things, the rest is syntax.
What Bill Gates did was probably a simple progression. I was never obsessed with programming - it is just something I do to accomodate a need. My son is an engineer in the construction industry - he cannot programme - nor can he play a piano - he cannot get his brain to coordinate three things at once - eyes, hands and ears. He does not seem to know about application and practice.

I wrote most of the Standards Australia document on managing risk in motor sport. The Chairman of the committe was a university professor. At one meeting, I said 'in any venture, there are usually four major risk areas which must be rationalised and managed. - Quality, safety, environment and security. That guy could not get his head around it. He did not recognise 'the flavour of the month'. When you work in manufacturing, every month there is always one of those four areas which is the subject of new bullshit.
Another professor at Deakin University said 'I cannot understand, when I change something in a workplace for the better, I go back 5 minutes later and it has reverted to what it was' I azsked him whom he was talking to - was it the Foreman ? He said 'Oh yes '. He did not even know the basics- that to change something on the shop floor, you always need to go one level higher in the hierarchy.
He was teaching industrial hygiene.

SS1: Sometimes humour is the best medium to transmit a message. One thing you have to realize when you're digging deeper is that extreme wealth gives rise to the privilege of owning the media and what they report about you, so a level of discernment is necessary. If Gates truly were a philanthropist (not an expert marketer and profiteer) as his acolytes claim, he would be developing infrastructure to transport and purify water in regions that are suffering.

Good health cannot be achieved without an adequate potable water supply. However, because you can't patent water, there is no profit in that. Investments in pharmaceutical companies which insist that health is derived through consumption of petroleum based synthetic molecules and potions from the tip of a needle bypassing the highly well developed human immune system are much more profitable, whether they work or not, because when you own the media, you own the narrative. Reality is irrelevant.
