My MKIII had (and has) one. Pretty sure I was the first person to open that engine up. I have had it since 1988

Did I read somewhere, this was a measure done at owner/dealer discretion to lower compression for post EPA/CARB/OPEC era gasoline quality?

Can't say for sure Bob. It shows up in my parts book, was on the bike when I took it apart, and Comstock suggested I put it back in. I also had him shave my head to compensate for it.

Cleaned and started to reassemble crank/rods. Opened a new in the box wrapped in wax paper bearing set for rods WTF! Looks like the babbit plating flaked off! Don,t know what it is but not using them!

Waiting for parts I installed bearings in engine case halves. Saw this hole by the sump. It likes like should have an O ring in it but I know there was nothing there when disassembled. Looked my parts/assemble books and they place one of the bearings covering this hole in the illustration.

Just a strange machining - nothing goes there.

That is how I feel about powder coat too.
The only bad thing about powder coat is when it gets where it shouldn't. Then you find out just how tough and durable it is!

A while back I had two frames and swingarms done for $300 and I didn't even clean them first - now it would be $200 each frame and swingarm to the same company so pretty close to you since you had other things done. I do the small parts in-house myself - that costs way less than a rattle can of paint! When I had a local guy who painted cars for a living painting frames several years ago, he was charging $300 and then decided it was too much work so he wouldn't to more - I delivered them to him blasted and ready for primer.

So, I agree - forget frame paint, with one exception. I paint the cradles in-house. I can powder coat them, but there is WAY more masking required than I want to do and they are not particularly visible so I prefer paint.

Moving along. One bastard piece to polish, primary cover! Spent a day picking and filing dents out of rear fender, any marks left will be under frame rail.

Had all the gaskets for rebuild, except the rubber bushing that seals the alternator wiring thru the inner primary. I'm not stopping assemble waiting for one. To prove I'm truly a junk man, Harley valve guide seal fit in with a little pressure LOL We'll see if it lasts.

Pop it out , smear it with silicone and pop it back in again .

Finished up assembly and polishing today! Have not started engine. My wiring skills are not what they should be. None original hot rod is one thing. looks like Gene wired it. lol Greg has agreed to rewire that will do away with connector blocks under the gas tank and clean things up with electronic voltage regulator and Tri Spark ignition!
