What Did You Do With Your Commando Today?

One has a sizeable hole in it, you can see daylight through it plus some of the wire mesh is frayed and I wouldn’t want that sucked in.

Last night Matt messaged me to say he had the exact same issue and he too sanded down the sides. Apparently K&N are under new ownership and have obviously made changes to the product. The bigger problem for him was that the RC-1820, the chrome backed one you have have altered ID so that they no longer fit the carbs. He has resorted to buying the carbs directly from Keihin and having the inlets made for him to fit the filters.

“When I fitted the RU 1820, rubber backs, I also had to sand the inner part that is facing each other in order to make them fit. So same as you.

So part of the long story is that the company that used to supply my Keihins in the US closed their doors (all too many are doing this these days). So I am actually going directly to Japan to buy my Keihins now. That said, they don't supply the air filter mounts or carb spigots. So I am now having to make my own.

In order to deal with the K&N issue, I am making a left and right specific mount that is offset to the outside. While you may not have seen the ID size difference on the RU filters, its quite noticeable on the RC filters and that's why I also adjusted the OD on the filter mount to make it work. I also made them a bit narrower (closer to the carb) to gain a little more space behind the filter. Its tight back there and a lot going on so any extra space helps.”
Why not seal the holed areas with silicone, and then reverse the filters so’s the damaged areas are inside?

That did occur to me but the thought of anything used to fill the hole letting go in time and getting sucked in the carbs put me off. Anyway the deed is done and I have 2 shiny new filters and 1 usable spare which obviously will not be needed unless I bin it, Sod’s Law and all that 🤣🤣🤣

Some pre-season service.

I had mine power troweled. Smooth, flat, dust free, pretty stain resistant. Kind of looks like marble

Seems replacing those K&N filters exacerbated an intermittent issue I’ve had since I took delivery of cNw#101 that even Matt couldn’t figure out, namely occasional holding higher than desired revs at times, in the 2-3k range. Since the new filters this presented repeatedly and sometimes stuck fast needing a blip, not good for negotiating small roundabouts 😱 I could rev to 4-5 k when stationary and would just hold indefinitely sometimes, yikes!

What fitting them has actually meant is a deeper investigation was necessary as the bike is effectively dangerous.

At Nigel’s recommendation I reached out to Ricky at The Carb Shack (in Rainham, Kent) this morning and had a long chat to bringing him up to speed with my bike and its history. He immediately suggested that it sounded to him that it was running too lean at idle and that the new filters were actually making things worse; more air still.

All it took was 1/2 a turn on the idle mix adjusters and the issue is resolved, bike runs great and no held revs. Every day is a learning day eh? He also offered if necessary a rapid service of the pair for £60-120 depending on time and back this week but said he honestly preferred to help folk over the phone whenever possible. Good guy to know me thinks.
