Are you working on the clutch ?
 
Too late for that, the five bolts holding the starter ring gear sheared causing some damage inside the casing, as you can see if you enlarge the pic. The gears seem to have escaped any major damage but the oil looked like some one had been panning for gold, just lucky nothing got caught between the gears and jammed it solid. Off to Thor Motorbikes for an assessment. :(

Starter Ring Gear -- ISSUE

I'm not sure if this is a known problem or not but it is a potential problem that should be noted. The RING GEAR (the gear that the starter is driving/spinning) can come loose as it is held on with five shoulder bolts and threebond. The problem, in my opinion from an engineering view is, the...

A few questions if I may..

What year is your bike?

What were the symptoms that made you look inside?

Did you also post on Facebook, as there was somebody on there showing a really alarmingly loose clutch basket.

This is one of those issues which keeps coming up where we should be able to find an engineering company who could perform a clutch basket rivet/ ring gear preventative maintenance fixed price service. Inspect/replace the rivets and dowel the ring gear. Surely between us someone must know someone with an engineering business who could do this?

Good point. It's probably best to have blind holes facing each other as well. Less chance of a dowel going walkabout that way. I think lcrken drilled his, but said it was very tough.

My thought was a smaller pilot hole sparked through then split ring gear off and full size hole 3/4 way through from each inside face so dowel is retained as you say. Pilot hole would locate gear/ clutch plate on a jig for full size hole.
 
Nice day for a Sunday morning Father's day ride, with a photo stop at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, recently re-opened for back-to-normal (almost) operation. Unfortunately, the ride verified my suspicion that my crash 3 months ago tweaked something in the front end. So now it will be out of service while I sort that out. But it could be something simple, right?

Hope your front end tweek is simple. I have recently had to have the frame checked (not my Norton) on a bike after getting no joy from fettling the forks etc. Turned out there was a slight twist on the headstock causing wheel mis-alignment. Looking forward to the re-build now.

Has a tendency to pull to the left slightly when braking. Top yoke also appears to me to be not quite perpendicular to the bike axis when riding straight ahead, but it's a very small difference, and I can't be sure it's not just rider perspective until I have a chance to check it more carefully. It is still rideable, but just doesn't feel quite right. I'll probably be mostly riding the Street Triple, or maybe the MZ, until I can check out the 961 more thoroughly.

School boy error today of bike fell over and broke the rear brake actuator /foot rest , resulting in no rear brake 170 miles from home but en route to the “ Sammy Miller “ motorcycle museum , so guess who was on hand to help me out , left him the broken bit with two little countersink screws broken off, & little while later came & found us in the museum with the repaired item good as new & gave us a personal tour off the Norton room , blown away

It's great that there are still craftsmen about the territory.
I love the Kneeling Norton, would love to take it out for a few laps.
That thin rubber pad doesn't look like a very good cushion for the shins though.
